Uhuru, Brooklyn's iconic design brand
Founded in 2004 by Jason Horvath and Bill Hilgendorf in the heart of Red Hook, Brooklyn, Uhuru is a multidisciplinary design studio. The brand designs and manufactures high-end furniture in a former 1850 brick and wood warehouse.
The brand is known for proposing objects with timeless design as well as to be anchored in a sustainable development perspective. In fact, the brand is involved in a material reuse project that includes the recovery and manual labor of wood from the Coney Island boardwalk and Kentucky bourbon distilleries as well as recycled materials. With an exceptional quality, each piece is made from the studio and handmade by the best designers and artists, true creators of tastes.
In addition to works from the permanent collections of the Smithsonian Institution and the Brooklyn Museum, Uhuru has collaborated with leading brands and the largest interior design firms to design and complete furniture and interior design projects. more crazy than each other Offices, hotels, restaurants or more conceptual projects, all projects signed Uhuru have met with great success.
Jason Horvath is particularly proud of the creation of the Vice Media offices, a huge project that led them to sell products in the workplace market.
A desire to go further to push the boundaries of design
"The small wins are the best," said Jason Horvath, who felt he was successful as Uhuru began to grow. Indeed, Uhuru quickly established itself as one of the most innovative firms in the United States.
After 14 years of activity, the two co-founders of Uhuru, both graduates of the RISD (Rhode Island School of Design), are satisfied with their backgrounds, their collections and more generally their achievements. They think that Uhuru's aesthetics are already established and strong, but still feel they have a lot to learn. They are grateful for the team they have been able to weld, for the work they have done, but are eager to learn more about design in all its forms.
Their inspiration, they draw on the streets of Red Hook and retranscribe through the collaborative aspect of the open studio. The two acolytes believe that the best ideas are born when people come together to form a team. Their studio is a complete living space including offices, photo studio, kitchen and living room. Always in music, the workshop is conducive to exchanges and the birth of ideas.
